The Narration The teaser for the historical sageuk drama, “The Scholar Who Walks The Night’, unfolds Kim Sung Yeol’s tale of woe. The narrator's familiar deep, masculine and sexy voice calmly sums up his life story and his fascinating transformation into a vampire. The music soundtrack is dramatic and spellbinding. Despite being a good vampire, Lee’s bloodsucking character, Kim Sung Yeol craves and feeds on fresh human blood. The vampire scholar seems to imply that he still has some humanity left in him as he has tasked himself to fight those conflicting human-vampire emotions, in a plot which is probably thick with many twists and turns. He vows to save his beloved and protect the Joseon world against the evil vampire, Gwi and his henchmen. |
Fans are fixated on Lee Joon Gi’s hypnotic vampirish eyes. There is something about Lee Joon Gi’s eyes that fascinates – there is that undefinable quality about them. Those PHOENIX EYES, which can express chameleon-like emotions, can make us shiver, flinch or cringe. |
In the exceedingly short but riveting sneak preview of what is to come, Kim Sung Yeol is shown to be hovering near the periphery of the crowd of Joseon spectators. As he pushes and shoves his way forward, his gaze roams over whatever sight is before him and he is a witness to something that is probably most horrible. He is forcibly stopped from bolting from the crowd. In a twinkling of an eye, Kim Sung Yeol changes form. The sudden feral snarling and savage baring of his fangs and gnashing of his pearly whites catch us by surprise. Then we hear Kim Sung Yeol's bloodcurdling roars. His bloodshot eyes appear vampirish. Hang on a second! Can you figure out what’s he is thinking and the cause for that sudden transformation? Probably, earlier on, he had been bitten by a vampire, and from where he stood, he might have witnessed something shocking. For the viewer, the earth stills; the atmosphere hesitates before the earth shaking moment when Kim Sung Yeol snarls. His second love, the cross-dressing book seller, Jo Yang Sun, played by Lee Yu Bi, is seen in the next sequence. She is squatting by a pool. Jo Yang Sun: the shocked expression when she realised that Kim Sung Yeol had kissed her the previous night |
Then, we are shown Kim Sung Yeol's gorgeous right face profile. He is resplendent in his 'gat' or traditional Korean hat and his hanbok. His face seems calm but emptied of all expression. When he turns slowly, steadily and beguilingly to meet the eyes of the viewers, he appears so breathtakingly handsome that ladies would definitely drool over him. In the next few sequences, we get to see Kim Sung Yeol’s beloved again, and the good-looking mustachioed TVXQ’s Max Shim Chang Min who plays the Crown Prince, Lee Yoon. |
Subsequently, attention shifts back to Lee Joon Gi. In that very intense moment, there is no mistaking in the look of determination and vehemence in Kim Sung Yeol’s pain-clouded eyes and the steely pursing of his lips as he moves his sword symbolically across his face. His destiny has been decided for him and he has to embrace it. |
The teaser is edited to combine two exciting high-speed chases. The hunter hunts the hunted at night and also during the day. Jo Yang Sun, the first prey, seems like a lonely victim fleeing in a forest with a malevolent female vampire in hot pursuit. In another scene, Lee Soo Hyuk plays the evil vampire who shapeshifts in the dark forest which is shrouded in dim light. The luminous silver moon hangs in the sky, casting eerie shadows on the forest floor. Then we see Kim Sung Yeol, together with the other Crown Prince, Jung Hyun, fleeing in broad daylight through a bamboo forest. They are charging through the bewildering maze of the bamboo trees, stumbling and trying to put a greater distance between themselves and a vampire. Joseon vampires are things that fly in the night and during the day. The vampire mentor of Prince Jung Hyun, Hae Seo is chasing, flying and leaving a trail of smoky clouds as he shapeshifts into a wind that blows fast and furious. The black cloud swirls, falls and rises and transitions into a shape that resembles amorphous smoke. |
Then in the next scenario, the Crown Prince shoots an arrow at a target, a stalker, misses the bullseye but the arrow scrapes the arm of a spy with some splattering of blood. |
Then comes the discovery of a gruesome scene. The viewer is allowed a glimpse of the huge hole filled with limp, lifeless bodies of some Joseon residents, undoubtedly the evil handiwork of Gwi. The air, probably, reeks of the thick, coppery smell of the blood of the dead. A member of the royal family has been thrown into a similar hole which is full of thorny vines. |
THE BECOMING Next, the viewers are made to watch the nightmarish scene of the grisly feasting on someone’s neck by the repulsive vampire, Gwi! Shudder! Horror of horrors! Gwi is sucking the life out of the person! Are the viewers actually watching the revolting becoming of one of his victims? The becoming of a vampire, the metamorphosis from human to immortal, is the moment human blood is drained off by a vampire. According to Western vampire lore, Gwi would have to embrace the victim and replace his human blood with some of his own vampire blood. What about Joseon vampire lore? |
One can almost smell the whiff of rust of the victim's blood as it is being drained away by Gwi, the evil vampire. There is this queasy feeling that is all too familiar when one is in a petrifying situation. Adrenaline takes over one’s body, causing one’s heartbeat to skyrocket. Isn’t it extremely traumatic to watch such scenes of the victim in excruciating pain and intense suffering? In one of the scenes, Kim Sung Yeol’s vampirish face seems ethereal, illuminated by the moonlight that bursts forth from the background. His vampirish eyes burn like fire. His mouth curls back to reveal his fangs and he releases his pent-up, bitter frustration with piercing, top-of-the-lungs bellows. Just watching Lee Joon Gi’s earth-shuddering convulsions, the tears welling in his eyes, the painful facial grimaces and the clenched jaw is enough to send nauseating spasms to every fibre of one’s body! Lee Joon Gi’s acting is awesome! |
After watching, Lee Joon Gi’s stunning performance, everything else is a blur. Images of his other beloved, Lee Myung Hee and the king, Seonjo drift in and then out until Gwi, eerily roars out his name, “SUNG YEOL”. A Joseon beauty: Lee Myung Hee, Kim Sung Yeol's first love |
In the final sequence, a manly and masculine Kim Sung Yeol straddles his stallion and rides off into the sunset with his body being buffeted by the wind. The horse is an emblem of 'life-force, freedom, nobility' and is also a symbol of the continuity of life. "The horse rider silhouetted against the yellow light and riding off into the sunset" is a strong and powerful image. It is indeed a pretty satisfying way to bring ‘The Scholar Who Walks The Night’ to a dramatic and symbolic conclusion. Based on the short teaser of this saquek vampire drama, “The Scholar Who Walks The Night”, one comes to the conclusion that it certainly deserves the time and the emotions that one is going to invest starting from 8 July 2015. |
The exciting teaser, which gives us a sneak peek of what’s to come, is building anticipation into an exciting crescendo. We expect great things from Lee Joon Gi and the rest of the cast. Fans believe Lee Joon Gi will deliver his best performance yet. There’s no mistake about it, Lee Joon Gi, the hero of this fantasy drama, always dominates the screen. The smirkers or doubters who labour under the mistaken belief that it is not worth their while to watch "The Scholar Who Walks The Night" are challenged by fans to watch Lee perform at his best. But Lee Joon Gi’s fans won’t be responsible if such scornful people are bewitched and bedazzled by the one and only gorgeous Korean vampire Lee Joon Gi, and thereafter, hanker after his vampire bites! |
