YINZHEN LETS RUOXI INTO HIS HEART: HIS AMBITION FOR THE DRAGON THRONE
Ruoxi closes the doors of her residence.
She then asks Yinzhen if he is aiming for the 'Dragon Throne'. She takes his hand and writes, ‘Royal Throne’ on the palm of his hand.
Has he told anyone else? She is the first one. Yinxiang
instinctively knows what Yinzhen wants even without being told.
‘Are you not afraid that I
would tell the others?’
‘Actually, I don’t want to tell
you. But I don’t want to lose the chance to open up your heart
which you have kept so tightly closed. But I
know you won’t tell the others.’ Even the emperor has never suspected. Yinzhen has confided in her a highly sensitive and highly confidential secret. That Yinzhen has shared with her his heart's deepest desire clearly shows how important Ruoxi is in his heart.
Yinzhen, as usual, knocks her forehead affectionately.
‘Now I ask you. Is pain from
Yin’e’s accidental kick still painful?’
‘I've brought another type of
medicine for you.’
They talked about Yin’e. She recounted her audience with the
Kangxi emperor.
He said, ‘I know that in
the future, you will forget what you have lost and appreciate what you have.’
I just say I don’t know.
‘Probably, he thinks you like
Yinxiang. It’s because of Minmin. Why did he allow Minmin to marry Zhuoyin?
It is good to unite two tribes. But, he secretly supports Zhuoyin. Let the
two tribes fight for power to level out their power.’
Yinzhen's response is lightning quick. He takes his hand and places it on the table, and Ruoxi puts her palm in it. He
promises that when the Crown Prince issue has died down, he would ask the
emperor for her hand. He believes the emperor would agree based on their
mutual feelings.
‘Don’t worry about these
matters. It’s better that you put your attention on more meaningful things
like my birthday celebration. What song would you sing or what dance would you
dance for me?’
A eunuch sends some medicine from Yinti.
‘I think the future will be
full of turbulence. The more afraid you are, the more calm you must be so
that people do not know what you’re thinking.’
He then gathers up her papers with her calligraphy writing
because they are pieces of evidence to compare with her future work. He is grinning from ear to ear, and tells her he expects her to improve.

After their heated quarrel, Yin’e is worried that Minmin has left
their marital home.
His feathers are ruffled and he sends a message that If she does
not come back, he would send an edict to divorce her.
Minghui, her sister, advises her not to be so petty over a mere lantern.
‘Give him some face since he has sent someone over.’
He repeats if she does not go back, he would divorce her.
He added that he does not want to eat ‘candied haw’ but ‘lotus
cake’.
Mingyu goes back to pack up her things, including her
handkerchief. I don’t want the red lantern. Yin’e is troubled.
Mingyu and Yin’e are suddenly very anxious because if her father
has been summoned to the palace, something must be seriously wrong.
Ruoxi reports to them that the emperor wants to make a final
decision about their failing marriage. They have been quarrelling day and
night so if Yin’e wants a divorce, he should inform the emperor immediately.
Ruoxi recommends that Mingyu should marry the Persian prince or return to her family home to stay with her parents. Yin’e could marry again.
Yinti who has been observing the incident admonishes Ruoxi for
interfering in their marital affairs and telling lies.
He corrects Ruoxi and announces that the emperor is just talking
politics with the Ming Shen e’fu, Mingyu's father.
Ruoxi explains that if she does not interfere, the two of them
would make a mountain of a molehill and they would end up divorced.
To cut a long story short, Yin’e makes the decision to persuade Mingyu to stay and the couple decide to stop quarrelling.

YINTI RETURNS THE BANGLE TO YINSI - YINSI’S ACCEPTANCE OF THE REALITY: SMASHING THE RETURNED PHOENIX BLOODSTONE JADE BANGLE INTO SMITHEREENS
Ruoxi questions Yinti, ‘Did you return the Phoenix bloodstone
jade bangle to Yinsi? It is obvious that he has not.
Yinti’s heart is filled with trepidation. When he returns the
jade bangle to Yinsi, Yinsi’s smile is bitter.
Yinsi is full of suppressed fury. After Yinti leaves, he smashes
the jade bangle with the stone ink well, used for his calligraphy.
Remembering their romantic moments is a nostalgic journey back to the
past but his fantasy of a future with Ruoxi has pricked. The return of the
jade bangle has ended all his hopes for a renewal of their relationship.
Yinti reports to Ruoxi that he has returned the bangle.
Yinti seems to know how Ruoxi feels about his biological brother,
Yinzhen.
‘In the end, Yinzhen precedes Yinsi in your heart. You treat
Yinzhen differently. Your eyes say it all.
Sometimes you flirt with him with a smile or meaningful look. Yinsi is
observant and has realised it.
If Yinsi has thought about me in this way from the very
beginning, then, he has never trusted me. He never revealed his feelings
about his suspicions.
Yinti demands to know, ‘Do you love Yinzhen?’
Exasperated with Yinti, she rebelliously proclaims, ‘I love Yinzhen. I loved him right from
the very beginning. I love him deeply. So, are you now satisfied?
She runs off and bumps into Yinzhen and Yinxiang. She makes Yinzhen promise, ‘You won’t lie to me. Tell me everything to me.’
Ruoxi mulls over the fact that Yinzhen would never abandon her.
In the Forbidden City, she is not alone. He is willing to listen to her fears
and worries. He has even warned her to be cautious of unforeseen dangers.
FINALE - BREAKING UP GRACEFULLY: RUOXI’S FACE-TO-FACE TALK
WITH YINSI
Yinsi and Ruoxi have avoided each other but they happened to be
in the same garden too. They realised it is best not to avoid nor distance
themselves from each other. It is best to thrash out their issues and the knots in
their hearts.
Yinsi is the perfect gentleman. ‘I’ve thought for a long time about the things I need to say to you face
to face. I’m not a perfect or ideal person and I don’t expect you to be
perfect. All is over. I’m happy you have been frank with me.’
‘I don’t ask to be forgiven but I want
to give you my blessings. You should take care of yourself.’

Ruoxi offers a new delicacy for the emperor's enjoyment. Li Dequan grumbles that Ruoxi has not produced anything new for half a year. The emperor is delighted and praises her creative
skills.
Yinzhen is asked about his cake just when he is savouring the
taste. His lips twitch and he gulps but he claims that it is delicious. Ruoxi pays guarded attention to their conversation and a smile forms on her lips.
Ruoxi tells Yinxiang that she has put some salt into Yinzhen’s
cake. She is tickled by the fact that she is finally able to play tricks on
him. Yinxiang presses his lips together in amusement.
Ruoxi's relationship with Yinzhen has become closer. Ruoxi looks smug. Yinzhen approaches, and his accusing tone shows he knows of her prank, ‘You are not afraid of me.’
Later, Ruoxi learns from Wangxi that there are rumours that the
emperor would remove the Crown Prince from his position. He has a banquet, and
because there is not enough of wine, he has vented his frustration on the
servants.

MID-AUTUMN FESTIVAL DRINKING BUDDIES: RUOXI AND YINXIANG DRINK BEFORE TRAGEDY STRIKES
The Mid-Autumn Festival has arrived. Ruoxi is happy and wants
to enjoy herself gazing at the full moon. She strolls with her food carrier in the palace garden, and happens to meet Yinxiang who is lounging against a seat. He is alone and playing the flute.
Yinxiang is a good prince but she regrets knowing about his fate. He
would soon be sentenced to ten years in solitary confinement, his worst nightmare but he does not know about it yet.
He seems to be melancholic and miserable but she does not seem remotely surprised by it. The palace is filled with malevolent residents. She drinks wine with him. It has already been many years since she first drank wine with him, that is, on Yin’e’s wedding night and his mother’s death anniversary. She is flooded with a wave of nostalgic memories.
Yinxiang feels he is not free to do as he wishes. If he was
not born of royalty, his life would not be so restricted. He could recite poems,
bring his flute and his sword along with him and ride his horse freely. He could roam far and wide outside the Forbidden City.
‘Even if I am free, I don’t
want my favourite brother, Yinzhen, to face the dangers alone. He has a
biological brother but yet, it seems in reality he has none.’
Ruoxi's eyes brim with tears, knowing the terrible misfortune that would soon
befall him.
